Drinking Coffee Minimize Risk of Prostate Cancer

Drinking coffee regularly may help lower the risk of prostate cancer according to a study. The study results were presented this week at a conference of the American Association for Cancer Research in Houston, showed that people who drank the most coffee or about 60% less likely to develop prostate cancer than non-coffee drinkers. The researchers say it is too early to start recommending that men should start drinking coffee to help prevent prostate cancer, but these results are very promising for men.

"Lifestyle factors are very few associated with prostate cancer risk, especially with risk of aggressive disease, so it would be very exciting if this association is confirmed in other studies," the researchers said Kathryn M. Wilson, PhD, at the Channing Laboratory, Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, in a news release. "The research we've done shows that there is no reason to stop drinking coffee, when linked with concerns about prostate cancer."

Researchers say that this is the first study of its kind to look at both prospective overall risk of prostate cancer and risk of localized prostate cancer and advanced.

In the study, researchers analyzed information from the Health Professionals' Follow-Up Study, which includes data on coffee drinking habits of some 50,000 people in 1986-2006. During that time period, as many as 4975 of them suffering from prostate cancer.

The results showed that people who drank the most coffee (six or more cups per day) had a 59% lower risk of aggressive prostate cancer (fatal or advanced disease) compared with non-coffee drinkers.

But researchers say that not only caffeine is responsible for prostate cancer prevention benefits. Research shows people who drank decaffeinated coffee also experienced a similar reduction in risk for aggressive prostate cancer.

The researchers say that coffee also contains many other potentially beneficial compounds like antioxidants and minerals that may play a role in preventing prostate cancer, and further research is needed to confirm these results.

Coffee has effects on insulin and glucose metabolism as well as sex hormone levels, all of which play a role in the occurrence of prostate cancer.
